[Seminar] Understanding and Preventing Falls: A Human Factors and Ergonomics Perspective

Title of Seminar:

Understanding and Preventing Falls: A Human Factors and Ergonomics Perspective

Details of the Seminar: Falls are a leading cause of accidental injuries and fatalities in both daily life and occupational settings. In this talk, Dr. Qu will present his recent research on fall prevention from a human factors and ergonomics perspective. A major barrier to effective fall prevention lies in the limited understanding of the underlying mechanisms contributing to fall risk and the lack of evidence-based interventions. To address this gap, Dr. Qu has systematically investigated the effects of various sensory, physical, and cognitive risk factors on fall risk through both modeling and experimental approaches. His findings enhance our understanding of the causal mechanisms behind accidental falls and establish a scientific foundation for the development of effective interventions. Dr. Qu has also worked on novel fall risk intervention solutions. He has designed an instrumented insole intervention for fall risk assessment, developed individualized gait pattern prediction models to support lower-limb exoskeleton interventions for high-fall-risk individuals, and created a soft robotic intervention for fall risk reduction.

Biography: Dr. Qu is a distinguished professor at the Institute of Human Factors and Ergonomics, Shenzhen University. He received his PhD degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech in 2008. From September 2008 to March 2014, he was an assistant professor in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Nanyang Technological University. Dr. Qu joined Shenzhen University in March 2014, where he founded the Institute of Human Factors and Ergonomics. Dr. Qu’s current research interests include biomechanics for accident and injury prevention, human-machine interaction, and transportation safety. He has published over 130 original research articles in SCI/SSCI indexed journals. Dr. Qu’s work has been well recognized internationally. He serves as an editor for Ergonomics, the longest-standing scholarly journal in the field of human factors and ergonomics. He also sits on the editorial boards of three other international journals in the field.
