Technical Visit on Occupational Safety and Health “Safety Use of Chainsaw” (Poster)

Date:
29 November 2009 (Sunday)
Time: 14:30 p.m. to 16:30 p.m.
Venue:
22B, Kam Tsin Road, Kam Tsin Village, Sheung Shui, NT.
Organizer: Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (Hong Kong)

Contents:
Power chainsaw is a high risk cutting tool but is commonly used in construction works as well as landscaping activities. A typical power chainsaw runs at a rotating speed of over 10,000 rpm with fully exposed cutting edges on both sides of the entire saw blade. Currently, there are only few if not none safety guidelines for using power chainsaws, this technical visit will focus on proper selection and use of power chainsaw, pre-work checks, and correct use of personal protective equipment. This visit will also include demonstration on tree cutting methods by using power chainsaw, such as “Compression & Tension Cut”, “3-Point Cut”, “By-pass Cut”, “Tear Bark Cut”, “Notch Cut” (Conventional, Humbolt, Open Face), “Bore Cut”, “Kick-back” and other proper ways for cutting. performance.

Seminar

SUBJECTIVE STIMULUS-RESPONSE COMPATIBILITY: The Effects of Spatial Congruence

Speaker:
Professor Errol Hoffmann
Date:
17 November 2009 (Tuesday)
Time: 10:30am – 11:45am
Venue:
HKUST Room 5583, lift 29-30, Organized by the Department of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management with the support of the Hong Kong Ergonomics Society

Abstract
Designers, when considering the interface between the human and machine, often have to consider the arrangement of the controls and associated displays. Spatial congruence is one of the major factors that affects the compatibility of the relationship between these, in terms of reaction times and error rates. Without experiments, it may be necessary for the designer to subjectively “guess” the most compatible arrangement. The seminar will discuss a person’s ability to subjectively obtain the most compatible arrangement and the relationship to actual performance.
